How To Remove Budgie Leg Band

Terminal week (Aug 2022)  we had to remove a leg band from a Galah that had become tight and embedded in the leg.

This Galah was  extremely lucky that his possessor came in when she did,  as the leg had become swollen and ulcerated, from the bird leg ring , and if she had waited a few more days, Dude the Galah would've lost his human foot. Dude is,  luckily, healing slowly at home with the aid of some TLC and antibiotics.  The tight leg ring has been removed,

 To remove a leg ring, the bird is placed under a general anesthetic then we cut through the band. Leg bands are adept for identification, of aviary and breeding birds, but can cause injury.  For pet birds we recommended that they be removed once no longer needed.

Bird Micro chipping is a much better manner of identification and there are many disadvantages to leg bands including: they can become too tight,  which cuts off circulation and can crusade injuries, deformities or necrosis which results in veterinarians having to dismember feet and limbs, they tin can harbor mites, they tin can become mis-shapen - causing them to cutting into legs which tin cause pain infection, they can catch on toys and other objects, they can become caught in cage bars - causing the bird to possibly injure the limb or gnaw off the human foot to free their leg, and seeds, clay, and other debris tin go caught in-between the ring and the leg.
